Mission Statement

Oak Grove Baptist Church is a family church with a deep sense of the importance of family in worship, praise, and service. The church has numerous ministries for children, youth, and adults, as well as an annual women’s retreat. The church has a strong focus on community outreach and works with various organizations to help those in need.

The roots of our church can be traced to a small group of devout Christian believers who met in homes and prayer groups in the rural precincts of Princess Anne County. They grew in numbers and felt the need for a place of worship. With their faith in God and dedication to His Word, land was purchased, and a bush shelter was built. This shelter was surrounded by a grove of oaks and was named Oak Grove.

A few years later, the late Reverend Arron Waring led this group to form a small missionary church and called it Oak Grove Baptist Church. A time came when the membership grew beyond the capacity of the existing church structure, and with prayers and much sacrifice, a new block building was built.

Over the years, the church has continued to grow in number and spiritual maturity. The church commits to evangelize and disciple the whole person. The church has a strong emphasis on youth and family ministry, as well as supporting community and international missions.

The church believes that the Bible is God’s revealed word and is the final authority in all matters of faith and practice. The church adheres to the fundamental doctrines of the Southern Baptist Convention and supports its statement of generally held convictions, titled The Baptist Faith and Message.

The church is led by a pastor and assisted by the deacons, trustees, ministers, and elders. The church is a member of the Eastern District Association and attends the district meetings. The church also participates in state and national conventions. The church has two Sunday morning worship services, as well as Bible Connections classes for children and adults. Pastor Copeland’s vision of “Each One Reach One” has brought the church to a new level. He has envisioned building a state-of-the-art sanctuary and has laid the foundation to serve its members and the community at large.

Membership

Membership is an expression of commitment, loyalty, and accountability to a local church. It means finding a place to worship the Lord and serve others in a caring family environment. It also entitles members to the benefits of church support such as pastoral/deacon care services, accommodations for funerals and weddings, anniversary celebrations, building/facility use, voting privileges, and relief in times of need.

In order to become a member of the church, a person must profess saving faith in Jesus Christ and give evidence of regeneration through a Bible-believing baptism by immersion (see ARTICLE II, Articles of Faith—What We Teach, above). Each prospective member must wholeheartedly believe the teaching of Scripture expressed in ARTICLE III, Church Covenant, above, and agree to submit to its discipline as set forth in ARTICLE VI, Church Procedure, above.

The elders shall supervise the work of the deacons, oversee all church agents and committees, evangelize the community and beyond, conduct worship services, administer the ordinances of baptism and communion, equip the membership for the ministry, admonish and correct error, promote sound doctrine and practice, oversee the process of church discipline, and mobilize the church for world missions.

Church membership meetings are held weekly or as needed to discuss the business of the church. An elder or deacon designated by the elders serves as moderator of these meetings. Each member must attend these meetings to bring any items for consideration and to vote on any proposed changes to church policy or procedure.

A church may grant a letter of transfer to any member on the active roll who wishes to join another church of faith and fellowship. The elders must approve such a letter, and the requestor must meet all requirements for membership in the new church. The elders have the responsibility to keep a record of all letters of transfer granted by the church and to make this record available upon request. The church may refuse to give a note of transfer to any member who is currently under the corrective discipline of this church.
